About the Role
University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an innovative and compassionate Consultant Obstetrician to lead their Perinatal Mental Health Service at the new Bournemouth Hospital. This exciting opportunity allows you to develop a specialist interest while providing excellent care to birthing people in a supportive, forward-thinking environment.
Job Summary
As a Consultant Obstetrician – Perinatal Mental Health Lead, you will provide expertise and leadership in high-risk obstetric care with a particular focus on perinatal mental health management, maternal medicine, fetal medicine, and preterm birth care. You will work across the UHD NHS Foundation Trust estate and have the opportunity to develop your own specialist interest within the role.
Main Duties
The post-holder will be expected to:
- Provide expertise and leadership in high-risk obstetric care and share a passion for perinatal mental health management
- Develop their own specialist interest which will be considered and accommodated within the job plan after discussion at interview
- Be a passionate leader within high-risk obstetrics
- Work across the UHD NHS Foundation Trust estate
- Support and develop the perinatal mental health service locally
- Undertake the investigation and treatment of obstetric referrals in accordance with departmental and Trust guidelines
- Participate in timetabled obstetric sessions and maintain high standards of modern obstetric practice
- Oversee the care of obstetrics patients admitted by yourself or other obstetricians/gynaecologists
- Contribute to the resident on call rota and participate in the non-resident weekend consultant on call rota
- Coordinate annual and study leave arrangements within the department to ensure adequate consultant cover

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Qualifications
- GMC Registration
- MRCOG
- UK CCT / CESR in O&G
- SITMs in Fetal Care, Pregnancy Care, Maternal Medicine, or Prenatal Diagnosis
- ATMS in fetal medicine, maternal medicine or high-risk antenatal care
Desirable Qualifications
- Subspecialty training
- Evidence of involvement in audit & research projects
- Evidence of involvement in risk management
- Evidence of Quality Improvement projects
Personal Skills
Essential:
- Good communication, interpersonal and organisational skills
- Ability to prioritise workload & use initiative
- Ability to know own limitations & when to seek advice
- Ability to offer acute O&G care as the resident / non-resident O&G Consultant
- Teaching experience
Location Information
Please note that this service has moved from the Poole site to the Bournemouth site in Spring 2025. If a role or service relocates as part of a planned move, excess mileage will not be reimbursed. Travel from home to the new work base will be classed as a normal commute. Any other changes will be managed under Trust or national terms and conditions.
