About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Emergency Care Practitioner to join our established team working in Urgent Treatment Centres across County Durham and Darlington. This exciting opportunity offers a permanent position based at Shotley Bridge Urgent Treatment Centre, with the flexibility to work across other UTC bases as required. The role operates 24/7 with shift patterns including day and night shifts.

We also operate a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and deliver care from multiple community hospitals including Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield, and Weardale, as well as over 80 other community-based settings and patients’ homes.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will work autonomously, assessing, diagnosing, treating, or referring patients of all age ranges with a broad spectrum of minor illness and injury presentations. You will be responsible for prescribing medications within your scope of professional practice as an Independent Prescriber or via Patient Group Directions.

You will prioritize patients through telephone triage or face-to-face assessment and carry out clinical assessments within the Urgent Treatment Centre or patients’ homes. The role requires maintaining accurate and comprehensive records in accordance with NMC/HCPC guidelines and Trust policies.

You will manage and coordinate resources within the Urgent Treatment Centre on a day-to-day basis, practice cost-effective healthcare, and contribute to the development of guidelines, policies, and protocols to support service delivery. Leadership qualities are essential as you will inspire others, demonstrate the Trust’s values, and create improvements in Unscheduled Care.

Person Specification – Essential Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse with NMC registration or AHP with HCPC registration, with 3 years post-registration experience
  • First degree in health-related subject
  • Masters level qualification in clinical assessment
  • Paediatric clinical skills
  • Non-Medical Prescribing qualification or commitment to undertake this
  • Mentorship/Supervisor Qualification

Special Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude
  • Flexible and adaptable with regard to shift patterns and working across other UTC bases as required

Experience:

  • Working in high pressured dynamic situations
  • Advanced communication with all disciplines
  • Evidence of working as an autonomous practitioner
  • Ability to manage patients’ journeys independently from assessment to discharge or referral

Person Specification – Desirable Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Minor Injuries Structured Learning with commitment to Degree-level qualification

Experience:

  • Evidence of budgetary control
  • Evidence of inspirational leadership
  • Computer literate with ability to use relevant systems (e.g., Systm One, Excel, Word, Teams)
  • Evidence of relevant clinical experience (e.g., Urgent, Primary, or Unscheduled Care)
