Job Overview

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Uro-Radiologist to join their friendly and cohesive team of radiologists with diverse expertise. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified radiologists looking to relocate to the UK and build a career within a busy department that has a strong record in teaching and training.

About the Organisation

St George’s, University of London is the UK’s only independent medical and healthcare higher education institution. With a rich history stretching back 250 years, St George’s is a modern, innovative academic and research organisation. Notable alumni include John Hunter, known as the father of modern surgery, and Edward Jenner, creator of the first vaccine used to eradicate smallpox.

Benefits of Working with Us

We share our site with St George’s Hospital, one of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals. Our smaller size creates a genuine community feel where students and staff can walk between clinical teaching rooms, laboratories, hospital wards, and clinics. We were voted London’s best student experience for two consecutive years in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.

Research Opportunities

Research at St George’s is focused within three institutes: Cardiovascular and Cell Sciences, Infection and Immunity, and Population Health. We aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in areas including infection and immunity, heart disease and stroke, and cell signaling. We’re also enhancing understanding of public health, epidemiology, clinical genetics, and social care sciences.

Job Responsibilities

The successful applicant will collaborate with other radiologists to oversee and ensure high-quality clinical services within the Radiology Department. This primarily involves providing a comprehensive diagnostic radiology service including general plain radiography, CT, ultrasound, and MRI. You’ll lead urology MDTs with experience in bladder, renal, and prostate reporting and case management.

Key Duties

The post includes general diagnostic adult sessions in CT and plain film reporting as part of integration with the wider department. Experience in testicular and penile specialty reporting and MDT delivery is expected alongside collaboration with the wider urology tertiary team. You’ll participate in a full-time diagnostic on-call rota (approximately 1:15) and regular weekend working with time off in-lieu.

Teaching Commitment

This post includes teaching of undergraduates and radiology registrars in the department. A standard full-time Job Plan contains 10 Programmed Activities, including 8 PAs for direct clinical care and 2 supporting PAs. Sessions will be a mix of acute/emergency work and outpatient reporting.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Medical Degree, have full registration with GMC, and possess CCT in radiology (or be within 6 months at time of interview). Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists is expected.

Essential Experience

You must have experience reporting A&E, GP, inpatient and outpatient plain radiograph examinations. The ability to take full and independent clinical responsibility is essential, along with urology MDT experience. You should be able to evaluate your own radiological practice and be independent in general ultrasound.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience of teaching undergraduates, postgraduates, and trainee specialists is desirable. Knowledge of legislation relating to radiology (e.g. IR(ME)R 2000) and understanding of Clinical Governance principles are also desirable.

Desirable Experience

Experience in trauma imaging and reporting, reporting of specialty urologist CT and MR, and experience of urological contrast fluoroscopy specialty investigation are desirable. Independence in urology specialty US, penile doppler, and TRUS would be beneficial.

Working Pattern

This is a permanent, full-time position. The diagnostic on-call is overseen by a single consultant with support from a second consultant radiologist on weekends. Weekend working is compensated by time off in-lieu during the week. The post-holder can expect up to approximately 5 weekends (on-call/second consultant) per year. The department is exploring how to address 7-day working, with potential for future sessional working in the evenings and at weekends on a rotational basis.
