Role Summary

We are looking for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist to join our department on a permanent basis. This post attracts 10 Programmed Activities and an on-call supplement. We welcome applications from those who wish to work full-time, part-time, or those who wish to work flexibly with some elements being able to be worked from home. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals are the lead provider for adult radiotherapy services and provides systemic and radiotherapy treatments for Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to provide a comprehensive Oncology service together with Consultant colleagues and provide Oncology expertise in the management and development of site specialist cancer services. You will collaborate with colleagues within the department to develop Oncology services and work with and support the established multi-disciplinary site-specific teams.

Additional responsibilities include participating in the out-of-hours on-call service, liaising closely with surgeons, physicians, and staff in other specialties and within the Trusts, supporting the service during Consultant colleagues’ leave, and providing supervision and management of junior medical staff.

The role also involves undertaking teaching, examination, and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and continuing education both locally and nationally. You will be expected to undertake clinical audit, continuing medical education, contribute to the annual appraisal process, undertake annual job planning review, and engage in research activities.

About the Employer

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides systemic and radiotherapy treatments for Lancashire and South Cumbria with its base at the Royal Preston Hospital at the Rosemere Cancer Centre. We work together with our partners across the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Alliance.

The Cancer Centre has grown considerably since we opened in 1997, and we are proud of our reputation for excellent patient-centred care and collaborative working. The centre saw a large expansion in 2012, co-locating chemotherapy and out-patient services alongside radiotherapy. A second chemotherapy unit was opened in 2017 at the Chorley site, continuing the investment into Oncology services in the organisation. Health

Essential: Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/Good Medical Practice.

Qualifications

Essential: Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice; MBBS or equivalent; Holds CCT or equivalent or will obtain within 6 months of interview date; Must be entered on the Specialist Register for Clinical Oncology on date of taking appointment (or entry within 6 months).

Desirable: Higher research or educational degree.

Experience and Skills

Essential: Trained Clinical Supervisor; Wide experience of Oncology practice including relevant experience in Radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Desirable: Trained Educational Supervisor; Stereotactic radiotherapy experience.

Management

Essential: Evidence of Clinical Leadership; Evidence of commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/service development.

Desirable: Formal management training; Evidence of significant audits, service development, etc.

Research and Development

Essential: Evidence of interest in personal development e.g. through research and/or publications; Thorough understanding of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects.

Personal

Essential: Proven effective communication skills (with examples); Works well within a multidisciplinary environment; Good organisation skills (with examples); Committed to collating and responding to patient feedback in line with revalidation recommendations.
