About the Role

We are seeking a Band A Special Care Dental Officer to join our Community Dental Service at Swindon Health Centre. This is an excellent opportunity for dental professionals to provide specialised care to vulnerable populations who are unable to access treatment in general dental practice. The role involves providing Special Care Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, and Urgent Care Dentistry to the population of Wiltshire and Swindon.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing assessment, comprehensive treatment planning, and treatment for people with special needs who are unable to obtain care from other providers. This includes clients with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, those who are medically compromised or have behavioural problems, as well as children with additional needs and children under 5 with high caries rates.

You will provide dental treatment as required and undertake urgent, routine, and complex treatment in line with Trust protocol and current best practice. The role includes assessment, treatment planning, and treatment of patients in domiciliary settings, and promoting and maintaining patients’ oral health within NHS regulations.

You will work with the wider clinical team to provide high-quality dental care for patients, achieve personal performance targets, and maintain awareness of the UDA system. The position requires meeting Band A Dental Officer Competencies as set out within the terms and conditions of the Salaried Dental Service Contract.

Additionally, you will participate in Clinical Governance Programmes as required by the service, including audit, peer review, and annual performance appraisal. You must ensure that standards for Dental Professionals are met as required by the General Dental Council, including demonstration of required CPD.

Working Pattern

The post holder will be required to work 8:30-17:00, with one hour for lunch, 5 days per week. The job plan is likely to include one day of Urgent Care Dentistry and four days of Special Care and Paediatric Dentistry. Our Community Dental Service has four dental clinics within Wiltshire and Swindon, and the successful candidate may be required to deliver services from any of these sites and in domiciliary settings.

Location

The role is based at Swindon Health Centre, Islington Street, Swindon, SN1 2DQ. The service covers the whole of Wiltshire, and the post holder may be required to travel to different sites. Due to the nature of the work including domiciliary visits and hospital-based services, use of a motor vehicle is essential for this position.
