About the Role

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Consultant in Hepatology to join our multidisciplinary Gastroenterology and Hepatology team within Basildon Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and compassionate individual to contribute to a high-quality hepatology service, offering both inpatient and outpatient care across a wide range of liver diseases.

You will be responsible for developing the hepatology service, working closely with colleagues in gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, radiology, oncology, and transplant centres, where applicable. The role encompasses a pivotal position in the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients with acute and chronic liver conditions, including viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, MASLD, cirrhosis, liver cancers, and autoimmune hepatitis.

Main Duties

As a Consultant Hepatologist, you will provide expert care for patients with a wide range of liver diseases including viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, MASLD/NASH, autoimmune liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Your responsibilities will include leading specialist hepatology outpatient clinics and contributing to general gastroenterology clinics as required.

You will perform and interpret specialist hepatology investigations and procedures, such as liver biopsies, paracentesis, and FibroScan assessments. The role also involves supporting inpatient hepatology and gastroenterology care through regular ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.

Additionally, you will provide advice and input for the management of liver-related emergencies, including acute liver failure and variceal bleeding. You will contribute to service development and clinical leadership, and support educational, research, and audit activities within the department.

Essential: You must be GMC registered to be considered for this position.

Desirable: Previous NHS experience is considered advantageous.

Endoscopy Experience

Essential: Independent endoscopy experience is required for this role.

Desirable: Additional endoscopy training is considered beneficial.
