The position is based at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS FT – Cross Site Working, located in Carlisle, CA2 7HY. This location offers a unique opportunity to work in both the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital as part of the emergency care modernization program.

Compensation and Benefits

The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £65,048 to £73,992 per annum, along with a comprehensive benefits package. Successful candidates will receive 27 days of holiday per annum, rising to 33 days after 10 years of service. Employment Details

Job Summary

This post is covering a training vacancy and will play a major role in the modernisation of the emergency care pathway. The successful candidate will be involved in the full spectrum of Emergency Department patients, including resuscitation and assessment of seriously injured and ill patients, dealing with complex cases, paediatrics, and minor injuries. You will have excellent clinical skills and the ability to lead on the shop floor.

Main Responsibilities

As a capable and experienced ST4+ clinician, you will independently manage the department overnight, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective patient care. You will assist the consultants and senior nurses in running the department, ensuring patients are seen by appropriate staff in a timely fashion. You’ll also maintain patient flow through the department, support national Quality Indicators, and undertake administrative responsibilities such as reviewing x-ray and pathology results.

Professional Development

The trust encourages continued professional development and offers opportunities to develop special interests in clinical research. You’ll actively participate in teaching sessions for your team and colleagues at varying levels, maintaining professional standards as set out by the General Medical Council (GMC) and adhering to Trust Policies and Guidelines.

Person Specification – Essential Qualifications

Applicants must have full GMC Registration with Licence to Practice and possess an MBBS or equivalent medical degree. Current certification in ALS/ACLS, ATLS/ETC, and APLS/EPLS is also required. Postgraduate Royal College qualification is desirable but not mandatory.

Candidates should have at least 4 years of post-registration experience in training posts or equivalent positions with consultant supervision. A minimum of 36 months working in Emergency Medicine and 3 months in Anaesthesia and/or Intensive Care Medicine are essential. Experience in paediatrics – either general or emergency medicine – is also required.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills are essential. You must demonstrate the ability to know your limitations and when to seek advice, prioritise workload, and use initiative. Previous or current teaching experience is essential, along with the ability to motivate and support multidisciplinary teams. Experience teaching medical students, postgraduate doctors in training, and multi-disciplinary teams is desirable, as is evidence of leadership skills and educational qualifications.
