About the Opportunity

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust is currently seeking a motivated Consultant in Endocrinology & Diabetes to join our Diabetes and Endocrine Department at the Ipswich Site. This is a unique opportunity for medical professionals looking to advance their careers in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), one of the world’s most respected healthcare systems.

The Trust provides hospital and community health services to almost one million people across east Suffolk and north Essex. We deliver care from acute hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, community hospitals, surgeries, community clinics, and in patients’ own homes. As one of the largest NHS organisations in England, we employ more than 12,000 dedicated staff.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can support either of our two subspecialist services – namely antenatal diabetes and the diabetic foot services. There will also be opportunities to develop research interests within this role, making it ideal for professionals seeking both clinical and academic growth.

The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per year, commensurate with experience. This reflects the high value we place on expertise in this specialty and our commitment to attracting top international talent to our team.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a range of clinical and professional duties. As a full-time Consultant in Endocrinology & Diabetes with General Internal Medicine (GIM), you will participate in the Consultant On Call rota, providing essential cover for acute medical emergencies.

Clinical responsibilities will include running Specialist Clinics and Outpatient clinics, with operating duties as per specialty requirements. You will also be involved in Teaching and training of junior staff and undergraduates, helping to develop the next generation of medical professionals in the UK.

The post-holder will provide Other care of inpatients or outpatients as needed, ensuring comprehensive patient management. Clinical and other administrative tasks will be required as agreed, contributing to the smooth operation of our department.

Participation in Clinical Governance is essential, helping maintain and improve the quality of patient care. You will work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care, collaborating effectively with the multi-professional team.

Person Specification

Applicants must have MRCP or equivalent qualifications, demonstrating the necessary medical knowledge and skills for this senior position. Full registration with the GMC with specialist registration is required, or you must be within 6 months of obtaining your CCT or equivalent (Pathway Portfolio).

Essential criteria include a wide range of experience in acute general medicine and diabetes and endocrinology. You must demonstrate the ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients, a fundamental requirement for consultant-level practice in the UK.

Evidence of clinical audit experience is also essential, showing your commitment to quality improvement and evidence-based practice within the NHS framework.

Desirable qualifications include training in appraisal techniques, a postgraduate thesis, and DAFNE accreditation. While not mandatory, these additional qualifications would strengthen your application and demonstrate your commitment to professional development.
