Job Overview

South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust is seeking a Consultant Forensic Intellectual Disability Psychiatrist to join their newly developed low secure forensic learning disability service based on Turner ward, Shaftesbury Clinic. This is an exciting opportunity to provide medical leadership to a skilled multidisciplinary team committed to continual learning and development.

The post holder will be joining a service that is part of the South London Mental Health and Community Partnership (SLP) Forensic Provider Collaborative, with goals centered on bringing care closer to home and improving patient pathways and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

The post-holder will provide medical leadership to the team on Turner LDA ward, a 12-bedded low secure ward within the new Shaftesbury building in Springfield Hospital. The Consultant will work closely with the ward manager and wider service to ensure safe, efficient, and effective service delivery that meets the Trust’s Key Performance Indicators and the SLP Forensic PC objectives.

From January 2022, this unit is housed in a state-of-the-art new secure building on the Springfield Hospital site. The ward has been specially adapted to provide the optimal environment for delivering care and treatment to patients with intellectual (learning) disabilities who may also have Autism.

The Consultant will carry overall responsibility for the day-to-day clinical care, risk assessment, risk management, treatment, and rehabilitation-focused care delivered by the Team. Robust support is available from the service Matron, Associate Clinical Director, Clinical Director, and where necessary, the Medical Director and Chief Executive.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications:

  • Primary Medical degree
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCPsych, or equivalent. Included on the GMC Specialist Register for Forensic or Learning Disability Psychiatry or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CCT.
  • Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act
  • Approved Clinician status as well as S12 approval.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Qualifications in change management and service development skills

Knowledge and Experience

Essential:

  • Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme.
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for intellectual disabilities and autism, risk assessment and risk management, interface with the Criminal Justice system, and forensic inpatient settings.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and experience of the ICETR process.
  • Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff, including those who may not have a formal qualification.

Audit and Management

Essential:

  • Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit and/or research
  • Commitment to working with allied agencies including carer’s groups, and local charities.

Desirable:

  • Experience of service planning and development
  • Experience of working with third sector partners

Research and Publications

Essential:

  • Evidence of participation in research, and outcomes of studies

Desirable:

  • Higher degree in research
  • Completion of a research project and evidence of its dissemination
  • Publication in a peer reviewed journal

Teaching Experience

Essential:

  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry

Desirable:

  • Teaching Qualification Evidence of feedback good from students
