About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced HCPC-registered Advanced Cut Up Practitioner to join our Histology department based at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow. We are seeking a dedicated professional who can provide high-quality histology services, with a primary focus on specimen dissection. The department operates from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, offering a supportive and dynamic work environment.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the direct delivery of histopathological dissection of category A, B, C, D and E specimens using Royal College of Pathologist data sets. This includes providing macroscopic descriptions of surgically removed specimens. As competence develops, the role will evolve to include independent practitioner responsibilities.

You will use specialist professional judgment, scientific knowledge, and experience to determine appropriate tissue selection for further examination based on visible pathological features and clinical details. Specimen dissection requires acute hand/eye coordination, physical dexterity, and judgment acquired through academic knowledge and practical experience.

Detailed Job Responsibilities

• Ensure Consultant Histopathologists are informed of significant unexpected abnormal findings at dissection as soon as possible

• Perform histology dissection accurately and efficiently according to Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures

• Supervise junior staff and contribute to the provision of high-quality histology services

• Supervise and perform investigations of varying complexity utilizing specialist knowledge and skills

• Demonstrate personal judgment based on advanced experience to ensure correct decisions are made by laboratory staff

• Advise and liaise with non-departmental staff regarding proper collection and handling procedures of patient biopsies

• Assist with reviewing workflow operations to maintain professional and technical standards

• Regularly supervise and review technical procedures, including quality control and assurance schemes

• Supervise equipment maintenance, repair, and safety

• Apply specialist operational and technical knowledge to advise laboratory staff on troubleshooting

• Ensure comprehensive and up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures

• Complete and supervise audits according to departmental schedule

• Report and investigate nonconformances in specimen reception and dissection services

• Identify possible areas of risk and take appropriate action to minimize risk

• Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, clinical governance, and accreditation systems

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in biomedical science or Qualification in Histology consistent with State Registration requirement

• Current registration with The Health Professions Council (HCPC)

• Relevant Master’s degree or equivalent

• IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection qualification

Essential Experience

• Minimum 2 years experience in specimen dissection and related tasks

• Ability to supervise and help manage a histology analytical service

• Experience at supervisory level in a general histology service

• Experience in analysis, interpretation and technical validation of diagnostic histology results

• Sufficient knowledge to analyze and troubleshoot technical and analytical problems

• Experience in quality assurance principles and practice

• Experience in verification and introduction of new techniques and equipment

• Knowledge of maintaining an accredited service including UKAS/CQC registration and IBMS standards

• Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)

• Experience training laboratory staff and assessing competence

• Experience with quality management systems

• Theoretical and Practical knowledge of specimen dissection and Histology techniques
