About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen on the Hyper/Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. The stroke service provides regional thrombectomy for Yorkshire and the Humber. It consists of 23 ward beds and 10 HASU beds. We are seeking an enthusiastic leader who can rise to challenges with a positive attitude and take the team on a journey of excellence.
Job Summary
The jobholder will play an essential role assisting with the 24-hour continuing responsibility with the other ward leader for the effective and efficient management of both areas. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team. The jobholder is responsible for helping to develop and maintain a ward or department’s philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate, safe, and quality care delivery.

Main Duties
The primary responsibilities include providing leadership to the clinical team, supporting and inspiring staff to deliver efficient, effective, safe, quality care to patients, and ensuring a positive patient experience. You will promote the building of effective teams and collaboration between teams, anticipate problems and take preventative or mitigating actions, and work with the Matron to lead the development of ward/department nursing practice.
Leadership Responsibilities
You will work with the Matron and Head of Nursing to suggest and develop new roles and ways of working. You must delegate and empower staff while maintaining overall continuing responsibility and accountability. Additionally, you will line manage the nursing team, including individual and team performance, attendance, management, and workforce planning.
Operational Management
Your role will involve ensuring the effective deployment of staff is mapped against the flow of patients to provide safe and effective care. You will support and participate in local and trust-wide recruitment events, manage the use of bank and agency staff, and investigate and respond to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents, and other significant events.
Budgetary Responsibilities
You will deliver an effective, safe, quality service within the budgetary envelope. This includes managing resources efficiently and ensuring cost-effective use of all ward resources while maintaining high standards of care.
Safeguarding and Risk Management
You will raise and respond to concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice, or wrongdoing by following the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust whistle blowing policy and supporting processes. This is crucial for maintaining a safe working environment for both staff and patients.
Person Specification – Skills & Behaviours
Essential: Experience of managing a team, standards of professional practice, and clinical leadership skills.
Desirable: Experience in complaint writing.

Essential: Must be a registered adult nurse with a recognized teaching/assessing qualification, degree in nursing, leadership and management qualification, and ability to work under pressure.
Desirable: Clinical speciality knowledge and knowledge of budget and finance.
Person Specification – Qualifications
Essential: Significant relevant experience at band 6, experience in audit and standard setting, and change management skills.
Desirable: Knowledge of budget management and experience of leading and managing a team.
