University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is seeking a proactive, motivated, and dynamic Locum Consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia to join our welcoming team of 11 Paediatric Anaesthetic Consultants based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our ongoing development of Paediatric services in UHL NHS Trust while working closely with existing Anaesthetic Consultants to provide high standards of care across our Paediatric services.

Service Overview

We are a tertiary referral centre for neonatal surgery and therefore provide anaesthesia for a large number of neonatal cases. The Anaesthetic department provides Paediatric Anaesthetic cover for various specialties including Paediatric General Surgery, Urology, Thoracic surgery, Orthopaedics & Trauma, ENT, Maxillofacial & Dental, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Oncology, diagnostic and interventional Radiology & Endoscopy, Preassessment and Pain.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the highest clinical standards in patient management and sharing responsibility for day-to-day patient care with colleagues. You will promote new ways of working and coordinate care for patients in the community, ensuring services are based on effective partnerships across the health community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff
  • Be involved in appraising and assessing juniors
  • Contribute to teaching, research and administration
  • Proactively develop the service
  • Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit

On-call Requirements

It is expected that the post holder will have received training and experience in all areas of Paediatric Anaesthesia and neonatal surgery and will take part in the Paediatric Anaesthetic on call rota, which is currently 1:8.5. You will be responsible for providing a safe and efficient Paediatric Anaesthetic service for both elective and emergency care at UHL.

Qualifications and Training

Essential:

  • Full GMC registration
  • MB;BS or equivalent
  • Fully accredited for Higher Specialist Training or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Fellowship in Paediatric Anaesthesia

Desirable Qualifications

  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations
  • Higher degree such as MSc, MD or equivalent
  • Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest

Clinical Skills and Experience

Essential:

    li>Excellent clinical skills and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the Job Plan
  • Ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems
  • Demonstrates clear, logical thinking and analytical approach

Management Experience

You should be able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors, with experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles. You should demonstrate the ability to effectively organize, prioritize and manage clinical workload while understanding the wider health agenda and modern NHS.

Communication Skills

Essential: Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues. You should be empathic and sensitive, with the capacity to take others’ perspectives and treat them with understanding.

Desirable Attributes

A demonstrable track record of successful change management and proven ability to maintain focus in a demanding environment would be advantageous. Personal integrity and reliability are essential, along with the ability to motivate and develop both medical and non-medical staff.

Research and Teaching Commitment

UHL is fully committed to continuing medical education for consultants. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to departmental quality improvement activity and the clinical supervision of postgraduate trainees in Anaesthesia. This includes experience of and a commitment to training/teaching undergraduate and postgraduates, along with appraisal and assessment skills.

Audit and Quality Improvement

You should demonstrate effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit, along with participation in a quality improvement programme and experience of quality improvement work and audit. The UHL Department of Anaesthesia is committed to working towards the Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation scheme of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
