Location and Facilities

The position is based at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, part of the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW). Our facilities are located primarily on a single campus close to Bristol city center and the University of Bristol. The Trust serves a catchment population of over 1 million children region wide and provides healthcare for the local community alongside specialist services for regional, national, and international patients.

Team Structure

You will be joining a current team of 6 consultants (5.7 WTE) in an established department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced professionals and contribute to the ongoing development of our services.

Salary and Benefits

This position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per year, pro rata. In addition to the salary, the successful candidate will receive the standard NHS benefits package, including access to the NHS Pension Scheme and generous annual leave allowance.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, applicants must hold registration with the General Medical Council (GMC). You must possess CCT or be within 6 months of completing the CCT or equivalent in Paediatric Gastroenterology, and be eligible for GMC sub-specialty registration for Paediatric Gastroenterology. Please note that the 6-month concession applies only to CCT applications, not CESR.

Desirable Qualifications

While not essential, having full GMC specialist registration of Paediatric Gastroenterology would be advantageous. This demonstrates advanced expertise in the field and may facilitate a smoother transition into the role.

Essential Experience

Applicants must provide evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the relevant specialty. You should demonstrate the ability to take responsibility and initiate management plans effectively, though close support will be available as needed. Experience of working in the UK healthcare system is desirable.

Clinical Skills Required

The successful candidate should possess knowledge and experience relevant to the specialty, along with understanding of NHS priorities. Skills in diagnostic endoscopy performed independently are required, although the department will support new consultants in optimizing their endoscopy skills.

Research Opportunities

The Trust has well-supported research activities in collaboration with the University of Bristol and University of the West of England. We encourage applicants with research interests, including those who have published peer-reviewed papers, presented at national meetings, or have experience writing abstracts for conferences.

Teaching and Training

As a teaching hospital, we offer opportunities to engage in undergraduate and postgraduate education. Experience in teaching medical students and providing departmental teaching is essential. Experience in supervising specialist trainees and completion of a ‘Train the trainers’ course for colonoscopy would be advantageous.

Management and Leadership

The role requires evidence of management training with the ability to organize the efficient running of a specialist service. You should demonstrate the capacity to manage a consultant workload effectively, practice independently, and show leadership qualities. The ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks is essential.

Communication Skills

Excellent communication skills are vital for this position, including the ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, and support staff. You should have a good command of spoken and written English and be able to present effectively to various audiences.

Personal Attributes

We are looking for candidates who can adapt to changing circumstances and demonstrate awareness of personal limitations. The ability to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels is desirable.

Trust Values

All employees are expected to demonstrate the Trust’s core values in their daily work. You must meet professional health requirements and be willing to travel to other sites when necessitated by the role.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This position is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, requiring a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to verify any previous criminal convictions. This is a standard procedure for all NHS positions.
